What is trail running?

Whether you live in the countryside or in the city, trail running is one of the most accessible ways to enjoy movement in nature.

At its simplest, trail running is running on natural surfaces, paths, parks, woods, fields, hills or mountains for enjoyment. That might mean an easy jog through your local green space or taking part in an organised race. In Trail running walking is very common and part of the sport.

Why trail running is different

Trail running trades pavements and tarmac for natural terrain. Unlike road running, there’s less focus on pace and finish times. Walking, especially uphill, is normal and encouraged. Trail running is as much about experience as it is about distance. Running off-road means:

  • More connection to your surroundings

  • Greater variety in terrain and movement

  • A full-body workout as you stabilise on uneven ground

  • Less repetitive impact than road running, which is kinder on joints

  • Better views (usually)
